Light fuse and stand back.
Firework Theater ignites new work each year in New York City. Led by co-Artistic Directors Ben Cikanek and Mike Klar, the company (originally known as Kids with Guns) presented its first show, The Blue Martini, at Under St. Marks in the East Village in 2003. Since then, we have collaborated with many talented artists across nine full-length shows (our last 3 at the beautiful 59E59 Theaters). We pride ourselves on our ability to foster a sense of community and excitement around our work (come to a party or a show or work with us to see what we mean); we love plays about love (especially ones that are both hilarious and heartbreaking); and we thrive on the excitement of presenting passionate new work from an emerging generation of theater artists.
Who are we?
Firework Theater is Ben Cikanek (co-Artistic Director), Mike Klar (co-Artistic Director), Delaney Britt Brewer (Literary Manager), Jessica Jolly, Heather Klar, as well as a long list of talented collaborators. Our advisory board is comprised of Paul Budnitz (founder, Kidrobot), Robert Patrizi (CEO, Halo [for Men] and Sebastien Grey Clothiers), and James Lim (COO, Xenon Hedge Fund/Owner, Boka NYC).
Each year, the company curates new work through an open call for script submissions (sign up as writer to hear about it!), hosts the Mid-Summer Sparkler (our popular annual benefit event), stages a full-length production, and produces a Winter Reading Series featuring 4 plays selected by our literary team from our call for submissions. Our most recent call for submissions yielded over 140 scripts from playwrights across the US and Europe.
Our past projects include the 2012 Winter Reading Series, The Pillow Book (2011, 59E59 Theaters), Wolves (2010, 59E59 Theaters), The Night Carter Was Bad (2008, 59E59 Theaters), An Octopus Love Story (2007, Center Stage), Life is Short (2007, The Michael Weller Theater), The Blue Martini (Fringe NYC 2006, DR2 and 2003, Under St. Marks), Conference Room A (2005, Red Room), and Spring and Jake (2004, Under St. Marks).
Firework Theater is a proud member of The Field, a not-for-profit, tax exempt, 501(c)(3) organization, the Alliance of Resident Theaters/New York, and Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts. Tax deductible contributions are greatly appreciated, and can be made online through The Field by clicking here.
